There's talk about a truce between kow :-) Karen and Rob and John. I
think maybe I should also offer an apology to Karen. The more I think
about it the more I realize I've been acting like a spoiled brat. I
guess it's just gotten to be a habit because I don't really hate Karen
at all but I can't seem to help calling her awful names.

I'm sorry. I'll try to do better in the future. If the guys can
swallow their pride so can I. Actually, being a woman, I should be the
one setting the example. Maybe it is time all this feuding stops.

And, thank you Gregory Hall for putting a sane outlook on all of this.
Five years is way too long to keep acting like a borish child.

Karen,

I didn't write that, Gregory Hall did.

I have already said I'm tired of all this and want it to end. Take John up
on his offer and move on. All the rest of us have agreed to it. Go and
enjoy life.

And if you ever want to discuss the Titanic LMK. I was quite a buff for a
long time, even knew a survivor , Marshall Drew who has long since died.

No thanks necessary. It's time this is ended before Lumpy, of the whiny "I

Thanks for your offer, whether or not it is genuine. I'm sure you can
understand that I have no intention of ever emailing you, nor have I
ever done so in the past. There is zero trust between us and I don't
see that ever changing.

However ---

I went to Europe for the first time in April, 1962 with my parents
aboard the RMS Queen Mary. It was a great experience, especially since
the great ocean-going passenger ships were soon to be replaced entirely
by air travel. I hadn't really HEARD of the Titanic and nobody among
the crew mentioned that we were in the SAME place as the Titanic was the
night it went down 50 years earlier. Maybe they weren't aware of it or
it wasn't appropriate to alert the passengers about. I didn't find that
co-incidence out for decades and doubt we would have sailed on the QM at
all, let alone that specific time had we known. Not that fate actually
works that way, but still ...

We saw the RMS Queen Elizabeth in mid-Atlantic on her way to NYC as we
were headed for Southampton. We weren't real close but she was
certainly easy to see "out there". Years later, we visited the RMS
Queen Mary at Long Beach, Calif. and I walked to the door of our cabin
as well as looked around the Cabin Lounge where I had spent most of my
time mid-sea due to seasickness. I became good friends with the Chief
Cabin Steward back then and we exchanged letters for awhile after I
returned to Wisconsin. We lost contact for nearly 50 years, but found
each other again about 5 years ago. We updated our lives but ran out of
reasons to continue communicating. He worked on the new QE II during
the early years of her being a cruise ship and then worked for Bass
Brewery setting up new pubs all over England and beyond. He is the
ultimate expert when it comes to the service industry and training new
people in the industry how to treat customers. Very nice gentleman,
too. And mighty handsome when I knew him and we both were *young* back
in 1962. He's another of the many jewels in my Treasure Box of
Memories.

I researched and read up on the Titanic and followed some VERY
interesting posts on the ng. Then I saw the "Titanic" movie in a big
theatre and when it was over, everyone just sat rigidly in their seats
and many were weeping...like me. Then little by little we departed the
theatre with our heads down...feeling stunned. I felt especially sad
because I experienced an ocean voyage so very much like that and could
almost feel what it must have been like for those poor terrified and
doomed people. I since have purchased the VHS tape but never have
watched it. Long film and a heart-wrenching one for me. But I intend
to watch it....!

The Titanic artifacts traveling exhibition was in Seattle a few years
ago and I went over to see it. Excellent. I touched a piece of the
actual hull and touched a wall of ice replicating an iceberg.
Incredibly cold and soon painful to my hand.

I think Robert Ballard is remarkable for what he accomplished. But as
for disturbing the site, perhaps too much of that has been done already,
but otoh, I'm extremely curious. Some actual jewelry, coins, dishes and
shoes, etc. have been recovered and are on display in the exhibition(s).
I'm fascinated, a bit repulsed and quite saddened. It's a vivid walk
back into history (a subject I usually am not much interested in).

You no doubt have seen one or more of the exhibitions living near the
Atlantic as you always have. I relate to the Great Lakes more than the
oceans...until I moved here where salt water and tides are part of life.
I can't keep the pesky seagulls from stealing the bread I put out for
the neighbor's crows. They have a fresh seafood buffet twice a day when
the tide goes out. Why do they want stale bread...that I have to buy?

How to control pesky seagulls? Let a large, bossy seagull control them
instead.

Be on the lookout for an extra large and healthy-looking seagull. Probably
will be one that has a black ring around his beak. When you see him toss a
piece of bread ONLY to him. Just one piece. He will start coming to visit
you often probably first thing in the morning and late in the afternoon
before he goes off to roost. Be nice to him, feed him left-overs. Gulls will
eat just about anything. They love meat the best of all. Bananas are a real
treat to them. Just about any fruit they love. Feed him stuff that you'd
normally throw away. They don't care if it's a little spoiled. You will make
a friend and you can almost have him eating out of your hand in no time. But
try not to let any other gulls get any food you throw to him.

What will happen is he will start being territorial. He will find a spot to
perch nearby and he will keep a lookout and will scream at other gulls
passing by and tell them to bugger off and they will for the most part.

I have one who sits on my dingy and runs all the others off unless I toss
out enough food that he can't eat it all and when it starts floating off on
the water's surface here will come the flock. He'll do his best to run some
of them off but he can't handle them all. So, again, the secret is give him
just enough food and in small pieces so he can eat it all himself before the
others get any.

My tamed gull migrates away every spring and comes back in the winter. This
particular one has been coming back for about five years now. He's huge now,
about twice the size of his buddies. No wonder they give him a wide berth.
He's so strong he can lift up a chicken drumstick in his beak and fly off
with it to his dinghy tied off behind a smaller sailboat I own and eat it at
his leisure.

What a Republican POV. The top bird who needs it the least gets it all
and the lesser hungry ones get nothing. "I've got mine; to hell with
you"?

When I first moved here I was nearly paralyzed with fatigue and relief
that I was actually HERE and could stay forever....not just visiting. I
had to get rested and get my bearings so I went to Lions Park, Bachmann
Park or anywhere by the water from Port Orchard to Poulsbo, parked by
the water and watched boats and ferries....and seagulls. I soon was
feeding them bread and then a whole loaf and then buying a cart full of
stale bread from the outlet bakery stores. After awhile, a sign went up
by the park commission this was no longer allowed. Others were feeding,
too. So I tapered way off and then stopped.

While I watched and observed their aggressive behavior, I noticed one or
two big gulls got virtually all the food and the others just never had a
chance. That made me very annoyed. Bullies! I tried every which way
to shoo them off and see that the other birds got food but the big ones
were so fearless. Then I tossed them whole slices or buns and their
necks would fill up and they couldn't close their bills so they had to
fly away. Then the others got to eat.

Now that is happening up here on a smaller scale. One big aggressive
one and 2-3 smaller more timid ones. Guess who is gobbling it all up
and the crows don't get any either. I have tried to chase him with the
broom. If he does fly up it's in a circle and is right back when I turn
my back. A couple days ago, I had thrown out whole slices of bread and
went back out and picked them up before he could gorge himself on them
all. He has more fresh seafood twice a day than he can possibly eat
down on the beach at the bottom of my hill. He is only around early
morning so I waited till later and tossed the bread back out for the
crows.

I want everybody to have a chance to eat, not just the bullies. They
need it the least anyway, tho everybody gets hungry and I don't want to
deny them entirely. Just share the wealth, even if not fairly.

place to see where they are getting food and then he bullies them away.
OTOH, crows are a menace, too. They are constantly pestering and

trying to chase them off. I suspect eagles were here before crows
were....which doesn't mean much even to people.

But it takes a lot of food to finally fill him up so he HAS to leave and
still have some for the others. I suppose that's what is meant in the
animal world about "survival of the fittest". He was a little chick

When I was a kid there was an old guy who claimed that he was aboard the Titanic
(or at least the folks who knew him claimed that). My dad said that that guy
looked old when he was a kid. His name was Spanhank, although I'm not sure if
that is the correct spelling. When I returned home from Vietnam, I saw him
driving a farm tractor down the road. My dad was born in 1911. So if Spanhank
looked like an old man when my dad was 10 years old, it was about 50 years later
that I last saw him.

I had pretty much forgotten about the old man until I saw the posts about the
Titanic. I just checked the roster of Titanic survivors and there is no name
even similar to Spanhank, but it made a nice story at the time. Every small town
in America has its own tall tales. I guess it's an attempt to stave off
boredom... or an attempt to invent importance to an otherwise unimportant
place...

Gulls are pigs. They'll stuff themselves so much they can hardly fly away.
But, the females, at least, need to fatten themselves up because when they
are hatching chicks they don't get to eat for long stretches. Then the male
has to bring them stuff and spit it up for them.

If you want them all to eat then buy a bag of cheap catfood. Gulls love it.
Little pellets are best. Toss out handfulls onto the water and scatter it
good here and there. They will all get a chance to eat then. The big bullies
just can't chase the whole flock away.

It might be nesting season and maybe he's bringing food back to his mate.
Seems to me he'd much rather have fish and fish scraps than bread, though.
But maybe he's just trying to get a balanced diet. He hee.

I do the cat food trick when I want to feed all of the local flock. Probably
only about 50 or so birds. He's sort of a wild pet so I sneak him special
treats. He's so funny. A couple of years ago he flew by me as I was going to
shore in the dinghy. He circled around and made very strange sounds. It
sounded like he was pissed because I was taking his nice comfy dingy. He
sits atop the little 3 hp outboard motor. But he didn't come back the next
day or the next. He came back about seven months later. I guess he was just
telling me Goodbye and thanks for all the good grub. I'm sure he had plenty
of fat stored to migrate to his summer feeding grounds whereever they are.
Probably way up the east coast somewhere. Lots of good dumps where gulls
make a very good living.

I buy those rotisserie chickens and I usually eat all the white meat before

What a Republican POV. The top bird who needs it the least gets it
all and the lesser hungry ones get nothing. "I've got mine; to hell

Sorry, but you're confused. It's primarily Democrats who are on

Gulls are pigs. They'll stuff themselves so much they can hardly fly away.
I've seen that. VERY greedy. They are so fortunate. Not many in the
animal kingdom can fly, swim and walk on land as effectively as they do.
They should never have to be hungry or fear anything. A gun, of course.

But, the females, at least, need to fatten themselves up

because when they are hatching chicks they don't get to eat for long
stretches. Then the male has to bring them stuff and spit it up for
them.
At least the males DO contribute to the welfare of the family. Good for
them. I know some (maybe most) kinds of male birds do help with feeding
but didn't know gulls did.
Post by Gregory Hall
If you want them all to eat then buy a bag of cheap catfood.
I already spend at least $3. per day on "cheap" catfood for the coons
and a couple of stray cats. That is roughly $100 per month as the cheap
stuff is often gone and I have to buy something more expensive.
Wal-Mart has raised the price of their food $3. per bag in the past
couple of years. The weight of the bags for the "cheap" food is
dropping from 20# to 18# to 16#. NO catfood for the gulls.

was disoriented when the film ended and could hardly realize where I was

I did not know that steel from the Titanic's hull has been used to make

jewelry at the time and they are lovely. But they aren't "part" of the

Antu is a flame group Karen. You cannot come into a group and dictate
what is discussed here simply because your sensitivities get hurt. I have
said to you, Lumpy, and Gaspar to take your fight with Gilmer out of antu.
You've driven off all the regular posters, which of course was your
collective intent to begin with.

When it became clear over the past week that you, and Lumpy don't want the
hostilities to end I AGAIN suggested you take it to email. No one but you
three want to read it anymore. No one wants to read your OT touchy feely
stories about your flowers and your squirrels. You're OT and outside of
the ng's stated Charter, and if you continue to post here, the regulars are
eventually going to return and you're going to get flamed. I've suggested
to you more than a few times that your best course of action therefore is
to leave and take your discussions, your analysis of John Gilmer, your
analysis of me, your analysis of your ice cube trays, etc. to email, or
start your own Google Group or whatever.

I
:>obviously am very able to be CIVIL if I'm offered the same first.

yourself enough to act on your own best interest and behave in a mature
civilized manner, then take it elsewhere and leave the rest of us who are
regular posters to the group to flame and have fun here.

I did NOT do what you keep accusing me of and I've explained what I'm
quite sure happened. If you can't accept that, then just DROP it. I
believe you ARE lying since you can't produce any actual evidence. You
see whatever you want to see and refuse to believe anything you don't
want to believe. Is that picture you posted for so long actually ME?
You obviously want everybody to think it is. You are just trying now to
sweep a lot under the rug and claim the high road. I don't believe it
will LAST for you or Gilmer, but I'm willing to watch and see.
Experience tells me otherwise. Hope I'm wrong now. It's not looking
good where you're concerned. I have known for a long time how agreeable
and pleasant Gilmer can be when he wants to for whatever reason.

I didn't see you ceasing hostilities when you posted the legal site
about my sending PORN pictures through the mail and that I had committed
a crime. If he couldn't get around to reporting his "crimes" I
supposedly committed till nothing could be done about it, you needn't be
pointing something like this out NOW. "Backing Off" doesn't necessarily
mean we ALL stopped at the same time. Don't keep throwing out snipes at
me and then trying to act innocent, Sarah. I will counter you. You
chose to interfere in John's and my personal business in the first
place...long time ago.

Absolutely NOT mine. You are the only female here and I majorly
threaten you by being here tho I have no interest in a "flame group"
which I don't understand to begin with. There is flaming on most all of
Usenet groups but those not involved continue on or kill-file those they
don't want to read. Why can you rule this group and declare it is all
about the abuse you care to dish out to others? I still don't
understand the POINT of what you are doing. You don't WANT to be civil
to others, especially me. I am trying, but you have a chip on your
shoulder about me. I really have no need to try to "make friends" with
you. Just LEAVE ME ALONE and go back to your usual exchanges with the
group members. I won't get involved at all. It's so boring and
meaningless anyway. Juvenile. Could you possibly kill-file me?

I have asked Gregory, Lumpy, and Gilmer to EMAIL me, but they refuse and
prefer to talk openly here. I can understand their attitude. If they
want to point me elsewhere to chat, that would be more than fine with
me. I will set up a Yahoo Group and either moderate it or one of them
can. But you and Ken won't be allowed to participate or I will pull the
plug on the group. I already own and moderate another Yahoo group. No
crapola or abuse of ANY kind allowed ... I guess it could be called a
NON-FLAME group.

Raccoons are not squirrels. Squirrels are rodents and raccoons are
related to bears. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong about
that.

Range 40 miles?

Hmmm...

Double that and we're talking.

As it stands 2 hours of dirt riding is not near enough, hope they can
find room for a bit more battery, at 45 lbs a total weight of 200
wouldn't be porky at all.

http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2352/did-harley-davidson-patent-the-sound-of-its-motorcycles

Harley aficionados, and of course the company itself, see it
differently. To them the Harley sound, said to resemble
"potato-potato-potato," is as distinctive as the Energizer bunny. (Judge
for yourself with the sound clips at
newsport.sfsu.edu/archive/f96/sounds/pending.html). When Japanese
motorcycle makers began horning in on the Milwaukee company's hog market
with their own heavy-duty bikes in the 1980s, Harley felt they were
trying to duplicate the rumble of the V-Twin engine, which buyers
supposedly seek out. Maybe, though if you ask me they mostly want
something loud enough to scare the crap out of guys in Honda Civics. The
Japanese put it more diplomatically when fighting Harley's trademark
request, arguing that all big motorcycles sound pretty much the same.
After six years of legal proceedings and no resolution in sight, Harley
caved, claiming it had won in the court of public opinion, etc. Just as
well. Can you imagine the trademark infringement suits?

Harley lawyer: "Your honor, our competitor's ripoff of our product
purposely goes potato-potato-potato."

Rice-burner lawyer: "Nonsense, it goes poTAHto-poTAHto-poTAHto. Motion
to call the whole thing off."

You clearly know jack shit about motorcycles and especially their engines.
Only a *few* other V-twin motorcycles are built to run rough and sound like
Harleys. I have a V-twin that barely makes any sound at all. 3,4,6. and 8
cylinder motorcycles sound nothing whatsoever like ugly Harleys. Get a
clue...

Only a *few* other V-twin motorcycles are built to run rough and sound like
Harleys.
So?

Now why do ya suppose they did that?

I have a V-twin that barely makes any sound at all. 3,4,6. and 8

Um, I never said anything about those configurations, are you on dope

It must have been a terrible conundrum for the Japanese - how could they
possibly build something as bad as a Harley without improving it, even if
only by accident?
Of course the Japanese try to provide markets with what the customers want
- yank Harley customers want horrible cast iron monstrosities (with extra
cchrome)

Honda has more variety and models of motorcycles than any other manufacturer
in the world. They've made 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 cylinder engines, in
displacements of 50 to 1832 cc's.

Harley builds two. One of them is one half their ugly and inept V-twin. My
neighbor has one.

Honda also sells more sickles in one day than Harley sells in a good month.

It's a point of pride with dumbfuckers. They love it. It's the sound made
by a poorly built V-twin when both piston connecting rods are connected to
the same point on the crankshaft. The V angle should be 90 degrees for a
smooth running engine, but shit poor V-twins are built at 75 degrees(?).
There should also be a crankpin for each piston. Failure to build engines
right results in uneven idling and shuddering of the whole ugly motorcycle
that is not fit to ride more than the distance to the nearest bar.

My own V-twin may have a similar angle for compactness, but the wise
manufacturer built in a counterbalancer. The engine runs smooth as silk.
It will also burn the ass off V-twins near twice its size.

The difference in the Harley engine is that the crankshaft has only one

You see a lot of the early K100 BMWs at rallies with over 300K miles
on the clock. The original bikes may have been flawed, but the
engines are certainly reliable.

Anything but that dumbfucker potato potato...
Wots a potato potato?
It's a point of pride with dumbfuckers. They love it. It's the sound
made by a poorly built V-twin when both piston connecting rods are
connected to the same point on the crankshaft. The V angle should be 90
degrees for a smooth running engine, but shit poor V-twins are built at
75 degrees(?).
If you want *smooth* the BMW's boxer design of opposing cylinders cant be
beat :)
Except for adding more cyclinders for increased smoothness.

Er, Goldwings currently have SIX cylinder boxer engines.

Hate to interrupt the rant, but as a guy who has two boxer (oilhead)
BMWs and has owned four K-bikes (inline motors laying on their sides)
it's a pity that BMW didn't pursue building a flat 4 (boxer 4), which
is what they were working on when Honda introduced the original
Goldwing. Legend has it that they dropped the original plan and went
with the K-bike motors because they didn't want to appear to be
copying Honda.

The boxers that I have are in the 1,100 and 1,500cc range and have a
strong side to side throbbing at low speeds. It's odd, but smooths
out pretty decently at higher speeds.

The K-bikes are much smoother and have signifcantly more power,
although they can get buzzy at higher speeds.

A four cylinder boxer would have been the best of both worlds.

Just my $.02 worth.

Back to your regularly scheduled rant, gents ;)

My own V-twin may have a similar angle for compactness, but the wise
manufacturer built in a counterbalancer. The engine runs smooth as silk.
It will also burn the ass off V-twins near twice its size.
HTH.
Could it beat a two stroke?
Of course not.

Hey, it's certainly your prerogative to do so. If that is your choice you
are welcome to it.

I'm not sure what you two are waiting to see "shake out" because that kow
won't change its spots. It has been a psycho for the totality of its USENET
life-span (as you both well know) so I don't look for any changes. It's
genetically impossible.

I see: continued 1000 word ramblings about stuff that no one cares about
(and are repetitions, anyway), continued "poor me! poor me!" screeching
that could turn milk to butter, continued deployment of the internet-sock-
puppet-army to bolter the kow's non-existent credibility, and on and on ad
infinitum like for the last 10+ years!

Karen, why don't you just let it go and see if Rob won't do the same?
After all, that's what you say that you want. Right?

And Rob, my friend, if you'd just have a little patience with her for

| Karen, why don't you just let it go and see if Rob won't do the same?
| After all, that's what you say that you want. Right?
|
| And Rob, my friend, if you'd just have a little patience with her for
| about 48 hours maybe she'll finally quit.
|
| Have a good New Year's celebration, guys!

And a happy new year to you, sir. You've restored my faith in sailormen.

I'm sorry. I'll try to do better in the future. If the guys can
swallow their pride so can I.
E tu, Sarah? I am not so inclined. The pirate is the one
talking of running up the white flag, not me. Nope. It's
ON!
I'm with PJ on this one. Let's see how it shakes out after a few
more days. :)
Hey, it's certainly your prerogative to do so. If that is your
choice you are welcome to it.
I'm not sure what you two are waiting to see "shake out" because
that kow won't change its spots. It has been a psycho for the
totality of its USENET life-span (as you both well know) so I don't
look for any changes. It's genetically impossible.
I see: continued 1000 word ramblings about stuff that no one cares
about (and are repetitions, anyway), continued "poor me! poor me!"
screeching that could turn milk to butter, continued deployment of
the internet-sock- puppet-army to bolter the kow's non-existent
credibility, and on and on ad infinitum like for the last 10+ years!
In email: "I finally had to put my daughter in a mental institution
because she would only associate with BLACKS. This *IS* Louisiana."
In email: Without any warning, my second wife walked out on me in
Christmas Day. She was a teacher and she married my HS biology
teacher, Brother Lloyd."
In email: "I had a therapist that looked like Julia Roberts. I looked
forward to seeing her as I had thoughts of 'her and me'."
In your home to Karen: "I went FOUR years for counselling but *she
couldn't straighten me out*."

I have. I've only been replying to his on-going attacks.

Group hugs.
